What is inside the sample?
- Lesson 1: Place Value. Name a digit's value, build numbers with models, and explore how neighboring places are related.
- Lesson 2: Number Forms. Connect pictorial models with numbers written in standard and word form.
- Practice and checks for understanding. Preview pre-assessments, guided and independent practice, checkpoints, and homework.
- Hands-on activities. Try partner games and creative tasks that ask students to build, draw, and explain.
- Learning songs and videos. Use the links and QR codes in the PDF with the accompanying practice pages.
TEKS focus: 3.2A and 3.2B
The lessons target composing and decomposing whole numbers and understanding relationships in the base-10 place-value system. TEKS 3.2A covers numbers up to 100,000; TEKS 3.2B addresses place-value relationships through the hundred thousands place.
Teaching note: Some sample examples use numbers above 100,000. Treat those as extension work and choose examples within the Grade 3 range when teaching or assessing 3.2A. See the Texas Education Agency's Grade 3 standards.
A quick place-value warm-up
Write 42,306. Ask students to build or draw the number, then explain each digit's value:
42,306 = 40,000 + 2,000 + 300 + 6
The 3 represents 300, and the 0 holds the tens place. Ask: How could you show the same number with a different combination of place-value parts? Then choose a related practice page from the sample.
How to use these free math lessons
- Start with a model. Use base-ten blocks, drawings, or labeled paper counters to discuss what students already know.
- Teach and practice together. Select a guided example, song activity, or partner game for the skill you want to develop.
- Check understanding. Have students explain a solution and use a checkpoint to decide what to revisit.
Use selected pages for classroom instruction, small-group reteaching, tutoring, or supported practice at home. Place-value work builds skills used in Grade 3 math and STAAR preparation; this sample covers two lessons rather than a complete test-review program.
